Videos: Kingsley Holgate Reads from Afrika: Dispatches from the Outer Edge

Kingsley Holgate

AfrikaKingsley Holgate practises a philosophy that is as unique as the man himself: "use adventure to improve lives". The renowned African traveler, who hails originally from KwaZulu Natal, spent 448 days doing just that during his "One Net One Life" anti-malaria campaign, which saw him journey to Africa's farthest reaches, distributing heavy-duty, durable mosquito nets to children under the age of five and pregnant women.

Holgate's adventures on that particular expedition - sponsored by Captain Morgan - have been captured in a book of extraordinary breadth, Afrika: Dispatches from the Outer Edge. The hundreds of bite-sized dispatches that comprise the text offer incredible insight into the vast diversity of the African continent - geographical and cultural.

"This adventure turned hard," Holgate said recently. "Just getting into remote areas overland is tough going. Don't mention the hauling of nets and the administration...". Holgate's team recorded the GPS coordinates of every single net given out, and will check on them during a future expedition in a few years' time. But was it worth it? "Absolutely," he said. "The expedition became a beacon of hope."

Here are two clips of the adventurer reading from his book:
